Michigan winters are long, which means your air conditioner sits unused for months.

By the time the first warm stretch hits Grand Rapids, your system has been collecting dust and debris waiting for its turn to work again.

A little preparation now saves you from sweating it out later when your AC struggles on the hottest day of the year.

Here are five steps to prepare your air conditioner for summer:

1. Replace Your Air Filter

A clogged filter forces your system to work harder than it should, which shows up as weaker airflow, higher energy bills and uneven cooling. Check your filter at the start of the cooling season and replace it if it looks dirty. Most homes need a fresh filter every one to three months during heavy use, and households with pets or allergy sufferers should plan on more frequent changes.

2. Clear the Outdoor Unit

Leaves, grass clippings and overgrown landscaping all block airflow and force your system to push harder. Cut back any plants growing within two feet of the condenser and clear away debris that piled up over the winter. After cutting power at the breaker, you can gently rinse the exterior fins with a garden hose to wash away dirt and pollen.

3. Test the System Before You Need It

Turn the system on for a short run while the weather is still mild and pay attention to how it performs. Listen for unusual noises, check that cool air is coming through the vents and confirm your thermostat responds when you adjust the temperature. Catching small issues in spring usually means a faster, cheaper fix than an emergency repair in July.

4. Check Your Vents and Thermostat

Walk through your home and make sure every supply and return vent is open and unobstructed. Furniture, rugs and curtains pushed against vents block airflow and force certain rooms to feel warmer than others. Your system is designed to circulate air through the whole house, and even one or two blocked vents can throw off that balance.

5. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

Even with regular at-home maintenance, your system benefits from a professional inspection before the cooling season. A technician can check refrigerant levels, test electrical components, clean the evaporator and condenser coils, clear the condensate drain and catch worn parts before they fail. These are the tasks that protect your equipment long-term and keep your system running at peak efficiency.

A spring tune-up also gives you peace of mind heading into the hottest stretch of the year. Knowing your AC has been inspected and serviced means one less thing to worry about when temperatures climb and humidity sets in. It is one of the simpler ways to extend the life of your system and avoid surprise breakdowns when you need cooling the most. For more information on how to prepare your AC for summer from the experts at Delta T HVAC, please contact us here or call us directly at 616.213.5889
